THE WINDS IN TARIFA

THE WINDS IN TARIFA . Tarifa is a Spanish municipality in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia. Located at the southernmost end of the Iberian Peninsula, it is primarily known as one of the world 's most popular destinations for windsports. Tarifa lies on the Costa de la Luz ("coast of light") and across the Strait of Gibraltar facing Morocco. In Tarifa, "Levante" and "Poniente" refer to two distinct wind phenomena that are commonly experienced in the region. That is why Tarifa is the perfect place to kitesurf. Here's a brief explanation of each: Levante: Levante is an easterly wind that blows from the east or northeast, coming from the Mediterranean. It is a characteristic wind phenomenon in the Strait of Gibraltar region, including Tarifa. The Levante wind is known for its strength and intensity. It can be a powerful wind that often brings clear skies and can reach high speeds. Poniente: Poniente is a westerly wind that blows from the west or southwest, coming from the Atlantic Ocean. It is the opposite of the Levante wind. Compared to the Levante, Poniente winds are typically milder and bring more stable conditions. They can still be strong at times but are generally more consistent and predictable. Poniente winds often bring cooler temperatures and are favored by windsurfers, kitesurfers, and sailors due to their reliable and favorable conditions for water sports. Both the Levante and Poniente winds play a significant role in shaping the weather and wind conditions in Tarifa. Their distinct characteristics make Tarifa a perfect destination for wind-related sports and activities. It's worth noting that the intensity, duration, and exact direction of these winds can vary depending on weather patterns and local conditions.

ABOUT LEVANTE

The Levante wind in Tarifa is a significant meteorological phenomenon characterized by strong easterly winds that blow from the east or northeast. It is named after its origin from the Levant region, which is the eastern part of the Mediterranean. The Levante wind is known for its strength, intensity, and gustiness. It can create powerful conditions. The wind speed during a Levante event can vary, but it can reach or exceed 30 knots (approximately 34.5 miles per hour or 55.5 kilometers per hour) and sometimes even higher. When the Levante wind blows, it often brings clear skies and dry conditions. The wind can have a significant impact on the local weather, causing temperature fluctuations and affecting the visibility. It can create a distinct microclimate in Tarifa and the surrounding areas, influencing the local ecosystem and shaping the landscape. The Levante wind plays a crucial role in making Tarifa a renowned destination for wind-related sports like windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing. The consistent and strong nature of the Levante wind attracts athletes and enthusiasts from around the world who seek challenging and adrenaline-filled experiences on the water. It's important to note that the Levante wind can vary in intensity and duration. Some Levante events may last for a few days, while others can persist for several weeks. The exact conditions and characteristics of the Levante wind can also vary from one event to another, depending on various atmospheric factors and weather patterns. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on the Levante wind in Tarifa, it is advisable to consult local weather sources or meteorological services that can provide real-time data, forecasts, and specific details about current and expected wind conditions.

ABOUT PONIENTE

The Poniente wind in Tarifa is a westerly wind that blows from the west or southwest. It is the opposite of the Levante wind and is characterized by its milder and more stable nature. Compared to the intense and gusty Levante wind, the Poniente wind is generally more consistent and predictable. It brings a reliable and favorable wind pattern to Tarifa, making it a preferred wind for water sports enthusiasts, such as windsurfers, kitesurfers, and sailors. The Poniente wind often brings cooler temperatures to the region, providing a refreshing breeze. It can create ideal conditions for outdoor activities and beachgoers. While the wind speed during a Poniente event can vary, it is typically less turbulent than the Levante wind, making it more suitable for a wider range of activities. The Poniente wind is associated with a stable weather pattern, and it often contributes to a clear sky and good visibility. Its reliable nature allows athletes and enthusiasts to plan their activities with confidence, knowing that they can expect consistent wind conditions. It's important to note that the intensity and exact direction of the Poniente wind can vary depending on atmospheric conditions and local factors. While it is generally a desirable wind in Tarifa, it's always advisable to check with local weather sources for the most accurate and up-to-date information on wind conditions before engaging in specific activities. Overall, the Poniente wind in Tarifa provides a favorable wind pattern that contributes to the region's reputation as a top destination for wind sports and outdoor recreational activities.

Barre workout & kitesurfing

Barre, the new yoga
Barre, the new yoga classes creates more flexibility for kitesurfing

Why Barre Class will make your kitesurf session better

WHAT IS BARRE

By now you must have heard of the Barre class; the workout that promises to make you leaner longer without getting bulk.

Started from an injured ballerina in the 50’s & it has completely taken off in the last 10 years and become the latest fitness trend.

barre workout benefits

This workout is a full body muscle endurance experience. It is inspired in ballet, yoga & pilates, but somehow, feels like its very own thing.

barre workout at home

The hour session usually starts as any class, warm up, followed by an intense session on the barre, could include some ab workout on the mat, and finally, a well-earned stretch.

The idea behind it, is to activate the smallest muscles, using your own body weight, resistance and repeated simple isometric movements.

The best part about it? Absolutely anyone can do this class, there are no requirements to join.

WHY IS IT GOOD FOR KITESURFING

Since starting barre over a month ago, we have definitely noticed an improvement in our kite sessions.

As a kiter, you would definitely agree with some of the reasons we love this workout :

Increased flexibility, deep core strength, extended endurance & a better posture.

Not to mention that it is a low impact workout, making it good for the joints.

As you start your kite journey, you might feel some tension in the shoulders, the pressure on your legs from walking upwind on the beach, and general fatigue from using muscles that you normally don’t use with other sports.

As you progress, you will want to start adding jumps into your sessions, and that will require great agility & flexibility.

Therefore, what better than a workout that gets you strong, but keeps you stretched at the same time?

Those used to heavier weights, HIIT, crossfit, might think it’s not enough, but it’s just not true, it’s a killer workout, while adding elasticity.

Where a rewarding crossfit session might leave your muscles sore and torn, an intense barre class with have you pumped, toned & feeling stretched.

In our opinion, this is the perfect workout, whether as an add on to your fitness routine, or your new workout addiction.

Where to practice

barre workout near me

In Tarifa, we strongly recommend trying it out at BB studio, where the owner Pilar, a former dancer herself, has created the most inviting space.

Come alone, or with a group of friends, you won’t regret. All you will need is comfortable workout clothes, and energy!

If you are planning a fun weekend getaway, a bachelorette, why not try something unique?

4 tips to choose the right kitesurf school

How to choose a kiteschool

How to choose a kiteschool

4 tips to choose the right kitesurf school

You’ve decided you want to learn how to kitesurf! Congratulations for making the best decision.

But now come a series of other questions, where do I learn, what school do I choose, then, what kite should I buy, where should I travel to kite?

On the question of where, we strongly believe that Tarifa has it all. Beautiful beaches and nature landscapes, nightlife, delicious food and most importantly: wind.

When it comes to choosing a school, it can be overwhelming.

In Tarifa there are over 60 legal schools alone, many with years of experience, great instructors and attractive offers.
So how do you choose one?

In this post, we will go over each of the important factors to consider, based on over 10 years of experience.

The best kitesurf school is one that:

1. Values customers
Many people will say the most important thing is certification, the price, the equipment (and these things are all very important)
however, we believe the number one thing to consider is:

Does the school value your time & money.

Learning to kitesurf is an investment and commitment.
That’s because it takes about 6-8 hours to get up on the board and get your first meters in, and roughly 10-16 hours to start riding independently.

During peak season, with so many schools, and so much competition, it is understandable that most schools will want to maximize the amount of students in the day. To ensure that you get the most of out of your lesson, make sure the school takes your time and money seriously.
Don’t be afraid to ask all the questions you have, make sure you feel confident that they have your best end results in mind.

Do they offer private or semi-private courses or do they want to group students together to optimize their time? Are they patient, are they willing to take the time to explain what the kite course will look like, will they personalize the course to meet your needs & abilities?

Once you feel good, about this factor, then you can start to ask the rest of the important questions that we will see now.

2. Certification & Registration

A registered kite school has many legal requirements to fulfill. Such as, insurance, boat rescue, up to date & safe equipment, along with certified and qualified instructors.
All schools that are registered and certified will be happy to share with you that they meet all of these items.

Tarifa can see many days with Levante wind, this means the wind pushes offshore. The beach is very wide, and there is lots of space, however, as you start to learn, you want to guarantee that you can be rescued by a boat if you get to far or need help.

There are a few different certification boards for kitesurf instructors, the most famous being the International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO). Teachers & schools have to keep up with their trainings & certifications, so it’s crucial to make sure the school teaching you is certified.

3. Experience
“The only source of knowledge is experience.” -Albert Einstein

Every teacher has to start with their first student, and that is the only way they will learn to truly pre-empt every student’s needs. Make sure the school you choose, has a good background of years in the spot + a team with a sturdy history teaching.

Training and certification are great tools, but even better amplified with at least two years of teaching. This will ensure a good understanding of different wind conditions, different skill levels and most importantly, adaptability and a versatile approach to teaching.

A school who has been in Tarifa for several years, will know about the changing wind conditions, where to find the best wind direction and consistency on which day, and that will maximize your experience.

4. Cancellations

Although very rare, some days there can be no wind in Tarifa. When choosing your school, don’t forget to ask if they will honor a no-wind refund policy.

It you can’t do your class at least you will get your money back, or the very least, a voucher to come back on your next holiday.

As we said, you are making a great decision by becoming a kitesurfer, and you won’t regret it.
Take your time, check out the different schools and don’t be afraid to call and talk to the school directly.

At Kite Progress Tarifa, we are dedicated and passionate in teaching and ensuring that you get the most out of your experience. It truly makes us happy to see people become new kitesurfers.

Our school has over 10 years of experience in Tarifa, along with two other schools in Cuba & Italy. Peppe the owner is a seasoned instructor and takes pride in creating a team of passionate & professional teachers.

Don’t hesitate to contact us now, whatsapp or info@kiteprogresstarifa.com to ask all the questions and book your course!

We hope this post helped

Beaches of Tarifa

Valdevaqueros

The beach of Valdevaqueros has very good wind conditions which makes it the most popular spot for kiteboarding. It also has very good services with toilets, showers, beach bars and parking near the beach. Valdevaqueros can be found at the end of Los Lances, north from Torre de la Peña. And like Los Lances the beach can be reached with the bus running between camping sites and Tarifa.

Los Lances

Playa de Los Lances is a long and white sandy beach with an average width of 120 meters. The beach is situated north from Tarifa until Torre de la Peña. It is a very popular kitesurfing spot with many services, such as beach bars, toilets, showers, camping site and possibility of parking. There is a bus running between Tarifa and the camping sites and it is possible to catch this bus when going to the beach as well.

Playa Chica

Playa Chica is the last beach of Mediterranean Sea. This small beach is meant for swimmers and sun bathing. During Poniente wind it is usually full of people since the wind doesn’t enter the beach same way as other beaches. In spite of its small size Playa Chica still has many services such as toilet, showers, restaurant and parking possibilities right next to it.
